The black walnut custom knife handle on this knife (and other knife handles I’ve made) is sourced locally from a tree that stood for probably well over a hundred years on my grandfather’s property.
The walnut tree stood in my grandparents yard for many, many years, long before I was born, in fact, long before they ever even lived there.
My grandfather was my hero. I learned from him what it means to be a strong, but good and kind man. He taught me that God came first and foremost and then family next before anything else – love and care for them.
A strong work ethic was the very core of his being. He believed that if something was worth doing, then it was worth doing right. Believing in giving your best to anything and everything you did and if you started it, then you better finish it!
My love of the outdoors; hunting, fishing and camping, came from him.
I remember that he told me that he’d carry me hunting and give me a gun when I reached 100 pounds. Oh how excited I was the day I got on the scales and realized I weighed 100 pounds and true to his word (of course he would be!), he handed down my uncle’s single shot 20 gauge and then carried me dove hunting. He carried me hunting and fishing and camping my whole life.
He passed away a few years ago, and while he never got to see a knife that I made, I think each and every knife I make, exists in some way because of him. He’s a part of each knife – not just because I inherited many of his tools that I use in making knives, but because of the skills and work ethic he passed on to me. And then there’s these knives with walnut handles which came from the walnut tree from his yard.
That’s makes these knives even more special to me and I hope they will be special to anyone else who receives one.
